History

Dankwart A. Rustow, Founder of The Energy Forum

New York Energy Forum was founded in the spring of 1982 by Dankwart A. Rustow at the Graduate School and University Center of the City University of New York. Originally conceived as a forum for executive planners, analysts, and investment consultants, it quickly evolved into the premier New York area seminar on energy issues for a broader audience.

For two decades before the Forum’s founding, Rustow concentrated his academic work on comparative politics and economic development, particularly in the Middle East. One of his most heralded articles, “Transitions to Democracy” is still required reading in many political science courses more than 50 years after its publication in 1970.

The energy crises of the 1970s encouraged Rustow to focus on energy when he found himself increasingly in demand by those looking to better understand OPEC, global oil prices shocks, and the Iranian Revolution.

Two books he authored during this period include OPEC, success and prospects (with John F. Mugno, 1977) and Oil and turmoil: America faces OPEC and the Middle East (1982).

Rustow was thoroughly interdisciplinary (before this became fashionable) and non-dogmatic, looking at every question on its own and examining problems from multiple perspectives, including history, sociology, and anthropology to produce better and more useful answers. He also relied on his particular sense of humor to defuse tension on controversial issues, and bring people together.

Rustow spent most of his career teaching, first at Princeton University, then Columbia University, and finally the Graduate School, CUNY where he retired in 1996 as Distinguished Professor of Political Science and Sociology. He graduated from the University of Istanbul in 1945, earned a second degree from Queens College, CUNY, and then a Ph.D. from Yale University in Political Science in 1949.

Rustow died in 1996 at the age of 71.

His widow, Dr. Margrit Wreschner, has been a generous supporter of the Forum. Besides the impact Dan had on friends, family and numerous students, Dan's legacy continues to live on in the Forum with its commitment to open discussion of critical energy issues. The Energy Forum, Inc. is now an independent entity, recognized as tax exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Service code.
